Default new Alpine INE-Z928HD Double Din installed in C5 Z06....

OK, so its been about 3+ yrs. of having to close my foldout Alpine (IVA-D310) so I could get heat/air from the center vent of my Z06.

In that time I have researched most all possible choices for a DD setup. Having always been an Alpine fan, I wasn't very intrigued with their last few offerings so I've just kept hoping that Alpine would step up their game.

So a couple weeks ago I'm surfing around and come across their latest piece...the INE-Z928HD. It is the first 8" screen offered for the automotive industry. It has Bluetooth phone/Pandora/audio streaming from my Android phone (HTC Rezound), full navigation, DVD, etc. and I also added the Sirius/XM module to keep my Hair Nation and Boneyard music fix. I also figured since i was going this far, I might as well add the backup camera which is installed in the black anodized Alpine license plate frame.

So I contact my local Alpine dealer and car audio specialists and setup the purchase and install.

One week later, here is the before (monitor closed) and after result:

This unit is so freaking amazing and it fits right in with my PDX tri-amp setup and Alpine mids/tweets in the doors and the JL Audio sub in the Stealthbox.

peace,

Rich

Did you install it or have the stereo shop do it? Did you/they just modify the stock console? I am wanting to add this to my C6 but can't find any Corvette installations beside yours..

Thanks

C6 is already double din, all you need is one of these kits. If no onstar get c2rgm24

For more installs look at 'what do you run' sticky.

Thanks for the info!!
That would be much easier but if that is the case why does Alpine say you need the larger FIT kits for the 8" screen? They also offer a generic bezel to use in vehicles that they don't have kits for?
I am not arguing, just trying to gather information..

C6 is a standard double din size. If radio is DD then all you need is kit from above link. If it's a different size you need something else.

Thats the weird thing about the Z928HD, it shows standard DD size and measurements but then Alpine states that it takes special install kits.. Not sure why this is..
Since it is so new not a lot of install information online yet.. will have to keep looking.. May also pick up the special bezel and see how it compares to the C6 console...

Thanks Again!!

I might be able to help a bit. The chassis of the 928 is standard double din. In order to get the real estate for the 8" screen, the screen hangs down lower than the chassis of the radio.

So in most installs , the chassis of the radio would move "up "in the dash cavity . I'm probably making it sound more horrible than it actually is. I have not installed one in a Corvette yet. I have put them in quite a few trucks and a couple different cars ( only 2 vehicles used Alpines pefect fit kits)

I will say this deck is WORTH every penny. The display is huge, especially if you look at it next to your typical 6.5' or 7" monitor. Even going split screen with radio and nav info is very cool. Hope this helps !

Did you use the bezel that Alpine sells to make it fit on the cars you didn't use the perfect fit kits? I really like the look of the Z928HD over the smaller S920HD so would prefer to go with the larger one.. Do you have any pics of the ones you installed in cars without the perfect fit kits?

Thanks!!

Hey Gary, I guess I need to upgrade my membership or get some sort of "imageshack account" before I can post pictures. Just wanted to let you know I wasn't flaking.

We just did a 2012 Superduty, and it was literally filing the dash opening a bit, then we used just the brackets from the dashkit , and re-drilled some holes.

So on a C6 it looks like top and bottom of the dash opening would be golden, the sides would need to be opened up maybe 1/16 on each side. I'm comparing a dashkit to a router template i made that has a nice 1/16 gap around the face.

We use "Best Kits" brand. Go to there website, look up the kit for a C6, it's a BKGMK382. Now Imagine cutting all stuff out of middle of the kit, and just using the pieces on the sides to mount the radio. I would probably glue the ends of the dashkit to side brackets, so we don't lose the 2 mounting points for the dash bezel to snap into.

I don't think it would be a big deal to put the 928 in your car, something any competent installer/shop should be able to handle. Hope this helps, and wasn't too long winded, any questions feel free to hit me up.

I measured the opening of the stock stereo and then using the dimensions listed in the Z928 and it looks like your right on with the 1'16" on the width but I come up with a 7/16" larger faceplate than the opening.. I am thinking on picking up a second console plate and modifying it work with the Z928, that way if something goes awry then I still have the one in the car plus when I upgrade the car I can put the stock stereo back in..
When you did the install in the Superduty did you use Alpines bezel or did you just trim the dash to fit the screen?
I think this project will start after the new year.. planning on putting in a layer of sound deadening while I am there too...

Thanks again for your help!!!

Yeah, we just filed the dash opening ever so slightly, and a lot of that was to create a gap , so the unit would open and close smoothly.

I say.. Go for it. It's a cool project.

I am going to run down to the only local Alpine dealer this weekend and check it out and see what they would want to install it.. I would like to do it myself but not having a heated garage it might be better to let the professionals do it as long as its not outrageously expensive..
