Default fuel gauge stopped working

I was crusing up the interstate with a half tank of gas and the needle bottomed out and low fuel light came on. I saw there was a fuel pump fuse (20a) but it looked fine.

Default fuel gage

hey..... common problem for all c5's. try techron concentrate. that might do the trick. you most likely have a fuel sending problem. expensive to fix (about 800 dollars) its caused from sulpher build up but techron and good gas only and it might be the solution. i actually changed the unit and the problem came back. since then i have used that stuff in every third tank full and it has not happened since. if you search the forum you will find this problem alot.......

Guess I'm going to get some Techron today. My gauge just fell to E with 3/4 tank of gas.

Check AutoZone and Advance - they're usually running 2 for 1 sales....

For you guys that don't know ... if you clear the trouble-code associated with a dead fuel gauge with the DIC, the gauge function will come back until the code sets again.

Sucky thing is I tried techron 3 times (separate fill ups of course, consecutively) when filling up and still got this dang problem and code.

Not sure what else to do. Haven't gone to the dealer cause it's a $240 program upgrade or some such nonsense.

Default Try some Seafoam in the tank

Have used both Techron and Seafoam to get gas gauge senders going again. Don't use both at the same time.

Ironically, I have both in the tank now. I have driven 80 miles thus far and nothing has changed. I am going to delete the code tomorrow and see if anything changes.

Deleted the code causing the "check engine" light and fuel gauge immediately started working again.

How can I clear the code? I went to a shop that had OBD-II and they said they cannot clear it because the OBD-II only handles emission-related codes.

Good for you. I went and had been charged with that "nonsense." Of course, it did not fix the issue otherwise that would make sense.

To delete the code with the key on hold 'option' and press 'fuel' four times the dic will then scroll through all the codes in the car, you can either watch em all or press reset to skip to manual mode. If i remember youll have p1416 hc h is historical c is current. Use 'option' and 'trip' to change sections and 'fuel' and 'gauge' to scroll through all the codes in a section. You can either clear the codes one at a time by viewing them and holding reset' until it beeps, or holding 'reset' while the section is being displayed. This an also be done while the engine is running. If you reset and something is still causing the code condition itll come right back. I got bored in traffic and ran through all the codes i had this morning.
