Default Rear Deck lid struts..how to replace

Is there a post anywhere on how to replace these struts? I can't figure out how to get the broken ones off. There is a metal clip that goes around them at the top and bottom that attaches to a wire.

Thank you..

Wire is for Defroster I believe. Use a 2x4 to support raised glass before removing struts. It is Heavvvy & will fall without struts. I did it on a C4 some years ago if I remember correctly its pretty straightforward, pop clips open & they slip right off.

Thank you Dave... It's the band clip that confuses me. It said to pry it open with a flat head screwdriver.. Will start over in the morning.

I've been using a wooden dowel to keep the lid open.. I should have painted it red, as it would look a lot more classy.

Confused:

New strut...plain with no attachments, no metal band clip

Strut that's on trunk...

Top has plug with wire that clips on to metal band around strut just under where it snaps on to trunk lid.. Band doesn't appear to have a split in it, don't know how to get it off and how to attach it to new strut...

Bottom: also had plug that snaps onto metal band arounbd bottom of strut. Also, has a rubber cover. Have no idea how to get it off old strut and on the the new strut...

Thank you Dave.....

I just realized that I believe they sold me the wrong strut. The new ones are smaller and thinner and have no metal band or cover and no way to get them off to transfer on to new strut.

Just called dealer..For such a simple fix, makes sense it would be complicated with wrong strut! Go figure, dealerships!

Thank you all...will keep you posted....

Paula

UPDATE: Dealer gave me the wrong one!! Of course, they don't have the right ones in stock today, but will have them tomorrow! Thank you all.... Why did I only realize this when I finally got one off and saw that it was larger than the new one??? Dahhhh

typically you use a small flathead screwdriver to pry the retaining clip outward. I have seen two types: those with that metal band and those with a plastic band

the metal you can pop right out then pull the end of the strut off the ball

the plastic may require you to pry the clip and try to pull the shock out at the same time

Thats very possible: avmind.com has a parts lookup with specs and photos (they manufacture hood/decklid struts for autozone and advance auto parts) and have numerous listings under any given c6 year. What I did was actually measure the originals then look at the advertised specs to make sure I got the correct units. Prior to that, a salesaman at a local store tried to sell me one that I could tell jsut from looking at it was the wrong part #. The other option is just going with factory parts - parts tax and gm parts house are the best and cheapest route for that.
good luck
