Default This year's Indy 500 Pace Car is the 2013 60th Anniversary Corvette ZR1

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway today announced that the 2013 Corvette ZR1 is the official pace car of the 96th Indy 500 race. The 2013 Corvette is outfitted in its 60th Anniversary package.

This is the 11th Corvette to serve as the official pace car but it will be the first time the 638-hp ZR1 has lead the pack.

The pace car could run with the actual race cars... Pretty cool.

I like the look of it too.

I think it would do pretty well if it actually stayed in the race.

It's not crazy at all. Do you realize how frail those cars are??? I could punt them all into the wall and their suspension would fly 100 different direction.

With Indy cars doing 230mph and the ZR1 205 just where on the track would you be next to them to "punt them"? Unlike NASCAR there are penalties for that in Indy because it is open wheel. While I find the initial suggestion humorous I find the resulting support of it unthoughtout. If the ZR1 cannot beat the ALMS GT2 car it will not be close to an Indy car. Just saying.

Much easier to keep clean! The stock ZR1 wheels are the worst I've had to keep clean because of all the spokes so close together.

Best prices I've seen here:

In some races there are cars with different performance levels mixed together, each competing in their group. That is all that I was implying. A race prepared Miata can come close to the performance of a street ZR1 in a tight turn. Does that mean it would beat a ZR1? No. Same in my analogy. I'm glad the ZR1 was chosen as the pace car!

Not only that 205 is ZR1 max speed on a long straight. Indy cars pull up to 3 G's in the corners, the ZR1 might pull a little over 1 G. INDY turns are 1/4mile long with 9 deg. banking. At 225 MPH thats approximately 2.2 G's. Limit on the ZR1 would likely be about 160 MPH in the turns. Maybe a lap average of 180 MPH.

Guess he's gonna punt them as they go by about 50 mphs faster than he's going, good trick if you can.

Looks like they would be easier to get those styrofoam thingies on the rotors to keep from chipping them. Much wider spokes.
