i've been fitting teh chrome, bumpers grill etc on teh 56, to see if i need to do any glass work to make it it right,,, i have a set of grill teeth that i got a while ago, and in cleaning them up, i noticed the numbers in them don't necessarily co-inside with the size of the teeth... i have them numbered and sized as follows,,,

6-5-4-2-2-2 then c-2-2-4-5-6... as you can see, it looks like i need another 2, but teh c taht i have is exactly the size of all the 2's....

so, do i need another 2, or should the c be larger than the 2's

i looked in a parts catalog i have and they list 6-5-4-1-1-1-c, etc,,, but it could be a typo....

i was tripping over grill teeth yesterday at carlisle, not realizing i was one short!!!!!!!!!!!

#C is for the center tooth only , the teeth are cut to fit the center bar contour as you move from center L and R!

thanks for teh quick reply... is teh c the same height as teh next ones?
in my case they are #2..
got any idea why why teh next size teeth i have are #2,, and teh catalogs call them #1?

Noland Adams resto guide page 413 lists for 53-57 the following:
6 5 4 1 1 1 c 1 1 1 4 5 6
and the 58-60 are:
5 4 4 1 c 1 4 4 5

No idea what a 2 is....

me either, but its the same height as the C, so it should be the right size, at least...3703425 is the casting number in it...

3706425 is a 1 for early and late cars
424 is a c for early and late cars
427 is a 4 for early and late cars
428 is a 5 for both
429 is a 6 for early

Get a copy of Noland's book, more than you will ever need.

The teeth are a pita to line up and install, but they give you a lot of access to the radiator area, much better than the 61-62. It is amazing that GM made each one just a little different, just like the eyebrows.... But, they make the car look a lot better which is why you see them on 61-62 restorods.

i appreciate your replies, and i have nolans book,,, still, my 3706425 teeth don't have a one in them,,, all 5 teeth that i have have a 2,,, i'm assuming that they are the same size because they are the same height as the center, C tooth, but why the 2 instead of a one, like i'm reading in all teh publications??

I bought a used set and ran into a mix of teeth, some had numbers that didn't match Nolan's book, but I figured out there were very small differences in the teeth and made them work. It's important to have some adjustments as the clearance to the surround is small. good luck

thanks again for your input,,, i have a set, well it seems i need another #2, or a one as teh books call for,,, i swapped for these many years ago, and it seems i have an extra #5,,,, so, i guess my best bet, is to use teh casting # and match up teh dimensions to get the one i need...

can you confirm the C tooth is the same height as teh teeth next to it??

The center tooth appears to be the same height, but like you know, there is very little difference in the tooth dimensions. I believe the difference in notch depth from one side to the other is one of the main differences, as you flip a tooth to make it point correctly on the opposite side of center. (Confused yet?)
Maybe somebody out there with a loose set can do some measurements.

nope,,, not confused at all!!!! i see it like you do... i find the center and next ones the same size, and only 1/4" or so difference from the rest,,, so i'm rigt on with what i have from what you've confirmed,,,
still stumped on teh 2's tho....

altho,, i still need a bar to mount them on,, which i posted in teh parts section,,, it may all come together yet...

I typically see a few spare teeth if not entire setups at the Kissimmee winter regionals down here. There should be a bunch of vendors who could help you out up there in PA if you ask around. If you're a MASACC member you can put a free ad in their regional newsletters.

People put some teeth upside down and don't look straight ,all original teeth have the part number up not down .

Aren't the notches different depths so the teeth point straight ahead if they are installed on either side? That was my recollection..
