Default RIP My Friend.....Andy Porterfield Passes....

Hi All,

For those on here that know the name Porterfield, you may or may not have heard. Tuesday evening at the age of 80 my lifelong friend passed away. He had overcome so much in life that the news has really hit me hard. I was responsible for taking care of maintaining Andy's racecar,at the track and shop, the last few years but have been working with him since I was 7 years old. He was a fierce competitor all the way through our last race in January. Not many people at his age could wheel a 900hp GT1 car but he always became a kid again when it was time to go out on track. Needless to say I will miss him very much. For those interested, cards or messages are being asked to be sent to the shop in Costa Mesa. Godspeed Andy and I will see you again. Calclub #5 GT1.

Brian

I had the opportunity to meet Andy last year when I was at his shop to purchase some brake pads for my Corvette. He just happened to be walking through the shop and the employee behind the counter introduced me as a Corvette Challenge driver. He seemed interested as to how the Corvette Challenge was doing as Porterfield is one of our Corvette Challenge sponsors. We talked for a while and he then took me into the back of the shop where he kept his race car. I was amazed when he told me he was still active in racing his car as a driver. That was the only time we had ever meet and as a senior myself I was totally captivated by his obvious enthusiasm for racing. God speed .

Andy was a super nice guy and a great role model for me.

All I can say is I want to be just like him when I am 80 years old. It was amazing to watch him go into Turn 1 at Auto Club Speedway doing almost 200 MPH in his GT-1 car after exiting the infield after Turn 4 of the oval.

He always had a supportive and encouraging word. He was always so genuinely interested in how me and the other racers were doing.

I will be at his service next Thursday.

For those of you who don't know, he was still racing his 900 HP GT1 Camaro up to January 2012. To be 81 and doing 200 MPH on a road course is awesome.

"God speed" is the perfect parting salutation for Andy.
