I wouldn't have minded a good excuse to drop a bigger motor into it. Drove 25 miles to get home after the spring broke.

You should check-in here: c5-z06-discussion/list-of-c5z06s-with-failed-valvesprings-not-always-high-mileage-pics.html

It would be nice if we're able to build up a database of these cases.

Default spring

Consider yourself very lucky. My spring broke and let the valve fall into the cylinder,,,,cracked the sleeve, bent the rod and cracked the piston head.

Now I have a 10 year old z06 with a 4 year old ls6 and a depleted bank account.....thanks GM.

Hey Mike,

My all stock motor 02 Z with 23k miles goes in Weds for new springs (PSI Beehives) as preventive maintenance. The random issues reported on the 02's & 03's prompted me to have this done as insurance against a possible failure while at speed on track and all that would go with a motor issue.

I will check in with the other thread and report any findings on the condition of the original springs.

Will I see you this Saturday at the Valley GTG ?

From what I've seen in other posts a lot of the valve springs break at idle. Mine was idling along in third gear doing 20mph when it popped.

Except for the name this could have been my experience. I just finished my springs, and my story was the same; at idle it broke and I drove it 25 miles to home. The previous owner lost the valve, head and piston for a $3000 repair bill. I (and you) were lucky.

I have the good spring tool I'll sell cheap if anyone needs it.

Do you mean for $3k they did not replace all the springs? Or did you break a replacement spring? I'd like to know if the anyone has ever failed a GM replacement spring (ie purchased after 2004).

This is pretty crazy. I would have assumed they typically break while beating on them hard.

When I did the springs I used Comp 981s. There were three different colors when I opened it up. It boggled my mind that they didn't do all the springs with the spendy rebuild. The spring I broke was the stock yellow one, I assume original equipment, but not sure so can't answer your question. I have never heard of anyone having to replace a replacement though.

When I pulled my valve cover all my springs were solid yellow. This is from an un touched 2002 Z06.

Its hard to believe they only replaced the broken springs. Its good to have the 918's in there now.

Jim, I am interested in buying the tool from you today if the price is right. I have PayPal ready. Just let me know what tool you have and how much you want for it. I am holding off my order from Summit until I hear from you as I would like to save some $ if I could by purchasing used.

Thanks in advance!

Chris
