VIDEO- ZR1 Standing Mile and Review
Hey everyone,
The Smoking Tire has a new episode up. We took a ZR1 to the Mojave Mile, to see if Matt could hit his goal of 180MPH and to review the car. As anyone here knows, this car is insanely fast. And it looks really really good surrounded by blue skies and a desert. I tried to embed the player and it won't work. And I am in now way an IT person. So I apologize for you having to click a link. I know how heavy a mouse can be.
Hope you like it.

I know the feeling, took my 09 to Mojave in 2010 and ran 176.5 on my first run and ran 2 more times slower
as the wind picked up. I think it's the elevation of 4K + feet, the guys in Texas and Florida all seem to run 180+ stock.

Interesting video. I'm amazed the GTR was doing 179 stock.

With launch control activated, you can keep your right foot buried all the way through the gears--when you shift it will drop down to 4000 rpm when the clutch is released. It sounded like the author was lifting between shifts. Nice effort anyway.
And I agree that a stock GTR, even a 2012 with 530 horsepower, shouldn't outrun a car that's 500 lbs lighter and has 100+ horsepower more in a mile. Even assuming that the aero drag on the cars were identical.

3 things to take away.
1. the zr1 driver was using launch control - it really sounded like it was bogging and stuttering with launch control on the take off.
2. The zr1 driver could not quite get the shifting down - These c6's are a little tough to get the feel of the shifter
3. he looked as though he was a larger more portley man at 235 to 250lbs or more
if the GTR driver was in fact a female - she weighed at least 100-125 lbs less.
Put a 150lb driver in the zr1 that could shift and launch WITHOUT launch control and I bet the ZR1 could have hit 180+. I really think launch control with a heavier guy that could not get the hang of the shifter was why we weren't seeing 180mph.

Elevation, temps and wind make a big difference. As does how aggressive the pilot drives the machine.
Mine ran 180+ in the heat with a low quartering head wind. But that was at sea level (or close to it). Many others have done the same.
You'd be amazed how much impact wind and ambient temps have on standing mile performance. I've made several dozen passes at the Texas Mile, running 5 years in a row, and the difference in speed b/n mornings or evenings (with lower wind and lower ambient temps) and mid-day (with its higher winds and temps) can be as much as 5 mph.
Banging gears well (as opposed to sloppy or conservative) can be worth 3-5 mph as well.
In any event, it is a heck of a good time, and those that haven't done at least one event I recommend do it. You'll learn a lot about your car, have a great time doing it, and meet some great folks as well.

The announcer was wrong. 2 GTRs were running that day, a stock 2012 and a modded 2010. People have been yelling that Matt went "too slow" because he's fat on our YouTube channel all day, so we did some research and math and responded here.
The announcer was wrong, and the combo of altitude and wind were enough to him down a few MPH.

1. He lifted, even if just by a hair, at some point during the acceleration. Doing so will knock the car out of no-lift-shift mode.
Or...
2. The Corvette doesn't really have a no-lift-shift mode. I keep hearing a lot about it, but no one from GM (that I'm aware) has actually stepped up and said, "Yes, we added no-lift-shift to the Corvette." As Matt may remember because he was with John Heinricy in the CTS-V a couple of years ago at Monticello: no-lift-shift was designed first and foremost by HPVO for the V. John demonstrated it while he and Matt were on the track. I haven't seen a similar demonstration or announcement from GM for the Vette.
If GM has stated it's in the Corvette officially, then I apologize. I've just never read it.

The trick is not to lift at all. I've done this through the first 4 gears and it works. But you absolutely can't lift (which isn't natural, and easy to mess up).

I wouldn't be too worried, 176 mph isn't shabby.

The announcer said he ran the car as fast as it can. Forum members who ran 180 have proved him wrong.
