Default [PICS} MORE NE Dragway Vintage Racing

OK several requests have made it my way and here are some more New England Dragway photos taken around 1972. Takes a lot of time and patience to scan and repair these old photos, but still the detail is there, I hope you enjoy this batch....

More on the way,,,,ENJOY!

Thanks for the memories. I grew up in Massachusetts and would go up to Epping with my older brother when I was 13/14 years old. He taught me how to drive in the pits between rounds and eventually down the quarter mile. I actually remember seeing "Daddy'$ Dollar" (see pic above). I also remember seeing the Chi Town Hustler, Jungle Jim and USA-1 Camaro in their glory days just to name a few........ PLEASE post more from NED.

A friend of mine use to race a black '59 Corvette at NED (in the mid 1970s) called "MIDNIGHT EXPRESS"...... If you have a photo of that car I'd really love to see it..... Thanks again.

That car is still alive and well and living in PA. Forum member vettemaker owns it.

Bob Sprito's father and my father met (the only time my Dad went to the Drag's) and talked for a long time. As I understand it Sprito's Dad took a second mortgage out on the house to have the car's custom frame built for that car. From what I recall my Dad telling me, the parents support Bob's enitre racing career, and was very proud of their son. I also remember my Dad telling me the frame was specifically designed and welded with some advanced material (at that time) that very few other cars had, don't recall what it was. But both Dad's talked for quite a long time....thought it was interesting... If I am not mistaking I thing both were in the Navy during WWII, but I am not sure of that statement...put that under I think thats what my Dad told me..

Thanks Plastic Pig. That is in fact my old friend (Jim Davy) and that sure is his car...... What the story doesn't tell is that after he sold it while living in NJ he ended up buying another bottomless $$ pit.... a Boat !!

If you want to see thousands of old drag pics check out the Drag cars in motion thread on the H.A.M.B. There are some unbelievable pictures. Don't say I didn't warn you if you spend several hours a day looking at it.

Default Daddys Dollar

I think Andy Spirito was pulling your dads leg,we call it talking chit.I was a original crew member back then and still see all the old boys from time to time,i'm still crewing for some of the best comp racers in d-1.fyi Ken Tingley of Village Smithy Chassis did the back half late 74,Andy may have been talking about what was referred to as a "floating 4 link"in other words the car retained a single leaf spring set up with slots cut in the middle of each leaf spring for which the rear end tubes would mount with a dowel letting the car move on the spring. I loved the old modified days and some of us are still out here. I have had the good fortune of hanging out with some of the best gray haired teenagers around and along the way getting into a couple or 3 national event finals. My little part is just that but now I get to wear a head set and my crew jacket from Vinny Barones win at Atlanta 06. And on a sour note we lost Ken Tingley last year. Mike
