Engine and TH400 install
Hi all
I've heard that you DO NOT install the engine and trans back into the car as a complete unit. This was my idea as I figured it would be much easier to do the measuring of the torque converter/flexplate desired gap with these out of the car that the alternative of me doing this on my back - then having to take the transmission out (again), bolt up the TQ and then reinstall the transmission. I have the complete front end off the car so the installation angle of the complete package isn't too extreme. I took both out together and it wasn't a big deal. So, question being, can I put the engine and drivetrain back in as 1 unit?
Thanks, Fred

Well, that's what I thought too but that was the advice given to me by a noted rebuilder in my area. Guess I should have asked more questions "why not" but didn't want to seem to get him pissed off
Thanks
Thanks

Brought the trans to Select Performance in West Babylon. Good folks. Thanks to them for taking the time to go over the install. Picked it up yesterday along with a new converter. They said the internals were pretty well used up. Now with my recently received Paragon order, maybe I can start some assembly on this project.

My ZZ4 came painted black from the factory, but as it aged before I could get it in the car, it turned orange.
FYI: The T400's transmission output yokes came sized for 1330 u-joints. A 1330 u joint spider is 3 5/8 inch wide with 1 1/16 inch caps.
Prior year driveshafts where sized for 1310 u joints. a 1310 u-joint is 3 7/32 inches wide with 1 1/16 inch caps. When people add a T400 to a prior year, and want to use their standard driveshaft, they have to buy a 1330/1310 U joint spider to mate the T400 to the stock driveshaft. I don't know if GM changed the driveshafts from 1310 to 1330 when they started installing the T400. Anyhow, just a comment.
