Default holy cow my Z died!

still in shock...

on my way to work, and no signs leading up to what transpired. a couple of blocks from work sitting at a red light and it starts to make a funny rough idle noise and stalls. then it barely cranks and runs rough as hell. i decide to limp to work. it starts but i need to hold down the gas a little to keep it running and it runs rough as hell. sounds really sick. its kinda like no oil, but ive heard that sound before and its not quite the same. my oil pressure sensor went out a couple of weeks ago so i cant tell what oil pressure is. the oil temp was about 170.

will the water pump go and cause something like this?

this sucks

Maybe valve spring failure? All the stories I've read about them were low throttle, sitting at a light, cruising, etc.

My 918's are on order, the shop is on standby.

Sorry for your luck but it really does sound like a valve spring. Any check engine codes?

I'd look into the simple stuff like maybe a throttle position sensor or MAF.

Is the engine knocking or making any unusual noise other than idling rough?

thx for the replies.

it runs so rough its hard to keep it running, not really knocking but hard to tell, its running so rough.

its like all cylinders arent firing.

didnt have time to pull codes but i will when i get off of work.

no warning watsoever, the car has been running great, i havent dogged it, ive been trying to get my gas milage up so im doing my best to keep the RPM's down.

Any codes? DIC state "REDUCE POWER"; it very well could be a spring issue. If so, that would be a relatively cheap fix and if you have the right tools, not to difficult to do.

Sound like a valve spring. I wouldn't run the engine anymore until your sure. It's not hard at all to just remove the valve covers and check.

I just swapped all mine with PAC 1218's. They were around $130 shipped through Scoggin Dickey.

ok checked the codes. the only one was 10-PCM P0118 HC

now my temp pickup is unplugged so that should explain that one.

also, i started it up, it is not running as rough as before but still rough. and it is fuel rich, i can smell it.

wont be able to look at more till tomorrow. after reading the forum im gonna check a few things.

bad gas - additive
coil pack
check the MAF
and valve springs

A bad spring won't run that bad, just have a miss in 1 cylinder, and it will be in time, same miss same time, every time. If that makes sense. Sounds like a MAF sensor if it is just all over the place with no rythm to it. Bad fuel smell rules out a vacuum leak. Be methodical with your diagnosis. Check your MAF and MAP connections, check your coil pack harnesses. Go step by step and you will find your culprit.

Is your air filter stock?

I use to have a K&N on my TA. I used too much oil on it one time when I cleaned it. It gave my MAF hell till I cleaned the oil off of my MAF.

Only problem with what you telling us is that if is the MAF you car should run fine at Wide Open Throttle. The MAF would only give you trouble at Idle and cruising speed.

When you pushed on the gas to keep the car running did you have to push the pedal to the floor?

It takes about an hour to remove the valve covers. Well worth the time to know for sure. It sounds like a valve spring.

how much noise would that make?

when i left work this morning a started it, it sounded like total crap, sounds like something is broke, it has a good knock to it.

had to leave it there, about to have it towed.

I would definitely not run that engine without finding out if its a valve. If you let that valve drop it will punch a hole in a piston and then you're gonna spend some big bucks.

Mine did something similiar a while back. It was a blown injector bank fuse. Had shut down one side of motor. Sounded horrible, ect, ect. Replaced blown fuse and all was well. Checked injectors harness on that side a found a small kink in wire that probably caused it. Hope this helps

God...it's like 1-2 02/03 Z's go down a week on here! I just ordered my valvesprings, but wasn't gonna change them until next weekend. This crap has me terrified. This sucks. Good luck man...if you busted a spring, I sure hope you got away without a lot of damage. After it died I wouldn't have been limpin it to work, I know that. In an 02/03 Z, there's one thing that's clear...if that thing stumbles...shut it off, flatbed it home and pull the valve covers. Don't give that valve time to drop if you can help it.

Good luck man....

turns out its a broken valve spring, #6

he's gonna replace and make sure no more damage was done and that it runs. then i'll decide if im gonna upgrade all of them. he normally doubles up on the springs is what he told me.

Hope it didn't take anything else out.

How many miles? Stock springs?

I've got mine up on stands right now doing brake/cooling work. As soon as she gets the wheels back on, it's straight to the gas station, then to the shop for my new Comp 918's that I got from Randy at DRM. I can't afford a rebuild right now, so new springs are going to provide some relatively inexpensive peace of mind.

Good luck!

...yet people still try driving them home or to work once the symptoms are shown.

It's cheaper to call a tow truck than replace an engine!
