Default Carb swap?

Im considering a tpi to carb swap. Ive saw a few threads about it. What Id like to know is what did you guys do for the throttle cable. Can I use the stock one? Also, with the high pressure fuel pump, do you just regulate it down to 6 psi or so, or do I have to swap it out too. As for the distributor, is it as easy as swapping to an msd or older hei ?

Any help would be appreciated.

In case you want to know, Im not ready to toss the tpi just yet, just weighing out the costs of fixing, tuning the tpi, vs the carb swap, in which I likely have everything to do in the shop here.

I am literally smack dab in the middle of my carb swap. Hopefully I will be getting it running this weekend.

As far as the throttle cable, this is what I ordered:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CSI-630C/

For fuel, I switched to an 84 fuel pump and will be running a bypass FPR. You can get adapters (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RUS-648060/) to adapt the fuel lines from the filter and return line to AN fittings as well.

Depending on the carb you are going to use is going to greatly affect the cost of the carb swap. I'm running a BG Race Demon, so that's a considerable amount of money right there.

The cars bone stock 87. I think a 600 vac sec would be enough.
What about the distributor?

Has anybody considered using the stock dizzy? It would require that you retain the computer and sensors but why not retain the computer, sensors, including the knock sensor and timeing controls? This would allow knock retard and data logging as well as a knock sensor LED on the dash. Innovative sells a TPS for Holleys if the stock one cant be made to work. I dont see why the CEL,, injector and IAC need to be hooked up, i think the computer could still control the fuel pump, AC and what ever else it does. The dizzy, spark retard, sensors, computer are all ready paid for. Add a tune/data log program to a lap top, could be cool. I plan on a setup like this for my xfire because I cant tune enough cam into the 84 to make me happy. btw your gonna need a flame suit

87 cable will work with carb; has same stud/ball type mounting

Why
Low pressure 84 pump only needs a inline reg dead headed to the carb. If you are going to the trouble of
a bypass reg with return line ,may as well leave the EFI pump in place

Because a 40 psi fuel pump would most likely annihilate the diaphragm in the FPR. And the 20 psi 84 pump would get the crap worked out of it if you dead headed it on a normal FPR. I'm not half assing my car. I'm doing it right, the first time.

I just got my 434 running, it was a 396 with a mini ram, and now I have a carb on my 434. I just left the distributor as it was and put it back in, the computer still thinks it is running the car. I went with the 4150 hp series from holley, along the super victor intake. I need some better weather for testing, but so far I love it. My 200 shot of nitrous will be installed later this summer after I get a few miles on it.

Flame away, its just a question for the guys who have done it. Im not quite ready to give up on the tpi, but with a intake/carb swap the car will at least run...I have most of the parts already...

Here's picture of my engine.

Notice the regulator (fuel line is being replaced with flex). Just use the stock fuel pump.

Cable side with homemade bracket (I'm going to be changing that too) The cable 'geometry' is off and cables are not tight in that bracket.

Front View..

And last thing is.. What do you do with all those 'excess' wires?

This is what the PO did...

If it wasn't for the mess of cut off wires, I would switch my car BACK to TPI.. Just the opposite of what you want to do.

Oh, and one more thing. Make sure you use a HEI distributor with a 'vacuum advance'.

Seems the PO of my car used the original distributor for the TPI and now I've got some timing issues.

I'll be changing that too.

with a carbed car....you wont have such a clutterd engine bay to deal with

HOLLEY or BARRY GRANT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO.......

YOU PULL THE FUEL PUMP OUT (sending unit) and all

THEN YOU REPLACE THE (FUEL PUMP) WITH RUBBER LINE (inside tank)

***put the sending unit back in the tank*******

THEN YOU PUT AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP IN THE MIX SOMEWHERE becasue the manual pump wont fit

you need SOME FANCY CARB HEADS????

(i dont know about using those tpi heads) i wouldnt try it..........

THEN YOU BUY YOU A Little small distributor (one wire) vac advacne or HEI

need the return line anymore.......

then you get (MSD) involved in the situation

just splice into your wires (batt and tach)

THEN BUY YOU A HOLLEY or BARRY GRANT

then you need a aftermarket throttle cable for the carb (like a chrome one)

u also need a throttle return spring

***WAM BAM***

YOU BETTER GET YOUR FAN TO WORK

as for your transmission?????????? im not sure//// i have a turbo 400 (3 speed) custom/mod c-beam

****************all of this can be done SUPER cheap....

electric fuel pump from (autozone) 30 bucks
f/pump relay?
rubber line
hose clamps
1 wire distributor
blaster coil
carb
throttle holder
return spring
black tape
hanyes manual (wire diagrams)

I USED TO BE A CARB MECHANIC**
NOW IM A T.B.I.GURU.............................. ........

way to easy.............. please hide your wiresssssssssssss

I'm running a Aeromotive #13301 bypass reg that works for carb or injection (w/ Walbro EFI 225 pump )
When I have the Holley on my SP intake I use the 3-20lb spring ; when I am running injection with the 4bbl TB I use the heavier 20 -65 lb spring

SO! you put your headers on and off from the bottom like a 305 monte carlo....so braggable

yeah L98's and L83 come with block huggers

shorty header are pulled from the top

factory "shorties" are removed from the top

So with long tubes, your gaining-- getting on the ground and a nice conversation peice.......

who cares

short tubes, longs tubes, rust tubes

If you install your long tubes thru top --- ill be impressed

other than that.....................so what
