Default First time at the dragstrip with the Z

I took the car to Houston Raceway Park tonight at a Test & Tune session. It was pretty warm, muggy, etc...water temps going through the staging lanes were 190+ and oil temps were over 180 as well. The car did not seem to mph very well, but I'm not sure if it was the heat, the driving, or what.

I got 3 passes with the car in in the 4 hours I was there.

1st pass:
60' 2.056
330' 5.267
1/8 7.788
MPH 98.77
1000' 9.937
1/4 11.741
MPH 123.81

2nd pass:
60' 1.985
330' 5.186
1/8 7.717
MPH 98.45
1000' 9.870
1/4 11.676
MPH 123.66

3rd pass:
60' 2.084
330' 5.271
1/8 7.792
MPH 98.57
1000' 9.944
1/4 11.750
MPH 123.59

These passes were ran on the stock Goodyear tires at around 26-27psi.

Track conditions tonight were:
Temp: 84.9 degrees
Humidity: 80%
Pressure: 29.94

The car is an 06 Z06 w/ headers, intake, and tune making 484rwhp.

Heat is the killer with these cars. I bet you go back in the winter and do everything the same you will pick-up 3-4 mph. Still not bad for your 1st time with the car.

You need to invest in some drag radials and run about 17-18 psi to get your 60ft down. Stock tires on a drag strip is a recipe for disaster, namely wheel hop and the resulting blown rear.

I am going to run the stock GY's for a while longer...I want to see how well I can do on them. I will be ordering a set of NTO5R's for my spare set of rear wheels for the future, but I want to get the best 60's possible out of the stock GY's first. Then get the DR's. Then I will get a cam and clutch and work that combination again. I just don't think I will ever run a great pass in this heat when I'm sitting in the staging lanes for over an hour in between passes. I'm sure my IAT's were pretty high and I know my water and oil temps were high. More seat time will hopefully result in a bit better times in the future.

ice down your intake by the maf to fight heat soak, as this is what you're getting and the car is pulling about 8-10* of timing out. Or, if you have HPT or EFI live, you could take out some of the timing pull from the IAT table (be concervative when you do this) and monitor for knocks through out the run. I would say you'd get 3-5 mph back instantly with any of those methods.
Back when I had an 06 GTO, I had great success with the IAT table. Took some test and tune on the street to find how much was too much and so forth, but in the end, even by scortching hot days, the car no longer fell on its face.

Those are great times considering the Texas heat and muggy Houston air. Your MPH is not that far off of what the mean stock Z06 MPH is in magazines, real world etc....Not bad 60' on stock GY's and your first time at track either.

If your waiting in the staging lanes for over an hour, have the hood up with ice on the intake and have someone pushing you up car length, by length. Do not start and stop your car. You should be nice and cool by the time your ready to make a pass. IMO, anything under 2.0 60ft with run flats is damn good and I would be suprised if you improved on a 1.9x.

Thanks everyone. I was pleased with the times given the conditions....but I saw the C6Z fast list....so I know the tires can hook better as long as I drive better. This is not my first time racing...just my first time racing this car. I did not want to drip water in the staging lanes, hence no ice. I was there by myself, hence no people pushing my car. It was hot as hell on the track, so I just sat comfortably in the car with A/C on until I got within 10 cars of the front (again, don't want to drip water). I may not improve much on the 1.9...but I felt like I could get a 1.7-1.8 possibly, just need to find the right rpm, tire pressure, burnout/cleaning of the tires etc...

The heat was just terrible. I got out of the car, popped the hood, etc...for a while, but they had too many issues on the track with people breaking that the lines were too long, and I didn't care enough about my times to tell myself to suffer standing outside in humid 100 degree weather. We'll see if she can do better..if not, oh well.

I used to push my Trans Am through the staging lanes. But I usually didn't go when it was this hot and sticky. Definitely decent times with good consistency given the conditions.

Sorry I couldn't make it out. But then not too sorry because I'd get irritable real quick waiting an hour between runs.

Not bad! Honestly, just better weather will help tremendously. When did you go and at what time?

Last night. Temps and such are listed at the bottom of the first post. I was there between 8pm-12am. Temps noted were at the track as of 8pm via dragtimes da calculator.

You are very consistent. More seat time and a set of tires will help tremendously.

I don't know which intake you have but the Halltech Beehive was taylor made for your situation. It really helps keep underhood heat out of the intake. Without the Beehive, the IAT doesn't actually see any decent air until about the time the run is over. OK, shoot me down and tell me you already have the Halltech.

Nope, don't have the Halltech. I am running the Stic It Performance CAI.

I have not had any issues with this intake since installing it.
