Default can I make my black walls into white walls

My 61 came with "Grand Sprint" "Touring SR" 205/75 R15 black wall tires and I want wide white walls for an original look. Do I have to buy new tires or can I take these someplace local and get them to add the white walls to my existing used tires?

Don't know about local, but perhaps Diamondback tires will add whitewalls to your tires for you? They do it to new tires they sell.

I think your RED '61 with blackwall tires looks GREAT! Those two colors contrast perfectly. JMO Dennis

I would check the date codes on your existing tires before spending money on adding a white stripe. You might have very old tires that really should be replaced with a new tire. No sense throwing good money after bad. Just my .02
One other thing to take into consideration is, how do you use your car? A daily or regular driver or just driving a short distance to local shows?

I drive my car regularly during the summer months and want the security of a fresh/safe reliable tire. I sold my approx 4 year old Coker redline radials for $300 and purchased Michelin radial X redlines from DiamondBack for a little over $900. In my mind is was positive upgrade for $125 per tire and I got the "look" plus a much better tire.
This was my experience that I offer for your consideration.

You don't "add" white walls to blackwalls....although there are Internet articles about grinding out 'narrow white walls' into wide white walls. Evidently, the white portion on regular white walls that is under the black part on each side can be exposed by some cutting away of tire material (not really a great idea). The only other option short of buying repro wide whitewalls are the old "Port-A-Wall' used for decades and believe it or not they still make them: http://www.portawalls.com/. People have used them with various level of satisfaction - I personally wouldn't bother.

Couldn't you used to be able to get white walls that were seperate and mounted with the tire on the rim or something? For some reason I thought you could.

yep, i remember making narrow whites out of wide whites using portawalls when narrow whites became popular. one 'curbing' will wipe them out..., and i seem to remember they didn't lay flat forever, maybe they're better now

Yea, if I remember at all JC Whitney was one place you could get them. They didn't lay flat on the tire and looked cheesy.

Hey I resemble that remark! Course I was 14 and couldn't rub two nickels together when I bought a set.

I read an article about a place that will do any side wall, any color, any width, on any tire you want. I think it was in Rod and Culture, but damned if I can find it now. There were pics of the machines, and the method they used, they even did Bike tires. I'm sure you could find it through them, or on the net. They were highly recommended by the authors, I recall.

If you want wide whites on your C1 (they will look GREAT!) buy a set of radial repros from Diamondback and forget the Mickey Mouse stuff.

Default porta-walls

Yeah, they were called Porta-walls, and yeah, I used them too, back in the day, and yeah, they were kinda cheesey. U could tell they weren't the real thing. Dunno if today's are any better, but the fact that we don't see them anymore would be a caution, I'd think.

I've got a new set of portawalls in the garage, only their 14inch. If installed right, read centered, and contact cemented to the tire, they worked amazingly well.
However the company I saw the article about actually carved the top layer of sidewall off on a kind of lathe and vulcanized the new one on with heat . Looked like it was made that way. Now where the heck did I put that article......

Beside the old Port-A-Walls that used to be made, there was also a paint for painting on whitewalls !

FIRST OFF, NOTHING PERSONAL IS INTENDED BY THIS. IT IS ONLY INTENDED AS HUMOR IN GOOD FUN!

Does anyone else remember the Uniroyal Tiger Paws TV ad with the jackass? (I can't seem to find it on-line.)

When the jackass saw the red stripes on the Tiger Paws, he thought that if he painted red stripes on his hooves, he too could run like a tiger. But after he added the stripes, he still ran like a jackass.

Moral of the story: Red stripes don't make Tiger Paws; only Uniroyal does.

And yes, Uniroyal made Tiger Paws for just about everything, including bicycles.
