I was wondering that with all the posts about 2002 to 2004 Z06's having major problems with valve failure if anyone here has looked into a class action suite?
I had a Ford Tempo that had a problem with the electronic distributor module and I never knew others were having the same problem until I saw a class action "ad" in Popular Science. I wrote to the address and sent in a bill for repairs not thinking I would ever hear about it again. About 6 months later I got a check in the mail for about $400.
Are there any attorneys here who could other some suggestions for those who had this major repair bill?

Very few had any real problems.

and it is quicker and less expensive to just fix it yourself if you are in the minority

Never going to happen. If you talk to local dealers and Corvette tuners they will all tell you that this does not happen often with street cars.

Replacement springs are $85 from Lingenfelter. If you can find a buddy who knows how to install them, I imagine you can get it done for under $100 + IOU-for-favor.

I hear it's overblown as an issue on stock engines.

I may replace my valve springs just as assurance nonetheless.

i was really concerned too, until I did my own research.. Its way overblown.. You have about a 2% chance of breaking a spring.. I live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.. I called 3 large Corvette Perfoemance shops. LG Motorsports, 21st Century Muscle Car, Corvettes of Dallas.. And 1 large high volume dealership. Huffines Chevrolet.. My buddy Keith has been my service tech for years.. Guess what I found when I brought the question up?? Maybe less handfull of broken springs betwwen all of these places..

2 more things you should know..
1..Most all aftermarket camshafts require a spring change at 15- 25k miles,, or you risk a broken spring...

2. The 2002-2004 Z06 had the most agressive stock cam ever put in a production chevy small block.. Put 1 and 2 together and make you own decision. Yes there is a risk of breaking a spring.. rare but possible

The internet kinda causes these "major problems". One guy on the forum posts one thing, and 3 or 4 days later there is an epidemic.

I remember about posting that my steering wheel wasn't centered a few years ago. 3 days later, there are 4 different threads about steering wheels not being centered. They were fine until someone posted, and next thing ya know there is epidemic of un centered streeing wheels..........................

Same with the column lock, start one post about locking colunms and all next week, you can read several threads about this...........lol


Valve springs are cheap and easy to do, if you have an air compressor. but if they havent broke by now, your probably ok. I am the orignal owner (7 years) of my with 36,000 miles. I think if they were going to break, it would already happened.

You gotta wonder, if the people breaking springs are hard on equipment. I knew one guy who always banged the rev limiter just about every day he drove the car, that cant be good for the valve train or piston rings.



Summery: If it ain't broke don't worry about it............. But if your losing sleep, just change them, your local speed shop (LG) can do it for a couple of hundred bucks.

Knock on wood..but at 56k miles I've never had any valve spring issues OR Column Lock problems. Overblown issues

IMO, you're more likely to have a EBCM issue.
If you really wanna start a Class-Action suit, focus your energy on that.

I bought my 02 Z used and had it for 3 months...put about 300 miles over the limited warranty and it dropped a valve! had to take it to ECS to have them rebuild it....car only had 33000 miles on it at the time. I never raced it back when i first got it...i was doing about 30 mph on a I-95 on ramp when it happened...cost me about 4500 cause it wound up destroying the head too

Never Heard of this valve spring problem on the 02 ZO6's until it hit me.....only cost me $10000.00 for a new engine, heads, labor and a whole lot of misc stuff.

I was only going 40MPH when the valve spring decided to commit suicide.

I changed to new GM springs. I don't think it's that overblown but it's easy enough change them.

I know it was stated, but for everyone of you guys that said it is "overblown..."


If it happened to you, y'all be singin' a different tune. AND-if you are under warranty, you can't replace the springs with anything but stock parts anyway.

The old General Motors does not exist today. My GM stock is worthless because that company is non existant.

The situation is that some 2002-2003 have had some broken valve springs.

It was a VERY small number of cars with this problem. But you wanna hear something ironic? A good friend of mine from the car club I'm in has an S-10 Blazer he did an LS1 swap on. He has a mild comp-cam and put LS6 heads on. He used springs from an 02 Z06 to ensure they'd be reliable. I didn't know this until 2 months ago. When I told him that I was going to purchase some 918 springs because I was worried about my springs in my car, he said "Wait, you mean there's a problem with the 02 LS6 springs?" LOL So about 2 weeks ago one of those springs busted! Exactly the same issue. Turns out the springs in my Z06 were fine because my car was one of the earlier built cars (build date is 10/01) and he was using springs from a later LS6.

Just funny to me that he used springs from an LS6 because he was expecting them to be more reliable. He was lucky, though. He didn't drop a valve and was able to get it sorted out in an afternoon.
