I just bought my 2000 used and I'm going through all the normal checks. I discovered quickly that the coolant probably hadn't been changed...ever by the looks of it! I addressed that issue yesterday.

I suspect the battery might also be eight years old. If so, then I might replace it in the next few months. How do I tell the age of an AC Delco Battery?

78-6YR
Serial Number: 833571
There is also a P followed by a stamp that reads 056N

Edit: Nevermind. I found the answer. If anyone is interested. Looks like my battery was made in May of 2006.

How do I read the warranty date code on my battery?

The warranty date code is located on the top label of the battery. The first character is either a P or S. The next two digits determine the month, the third digit is year and the fourth digit indicates the manufacturing plant. For example, P 094N means the battery was made in September 2004 in the New Brunswick factory.

Hay thanks for the info. I was trying to figure out my batterys point of life, and it's got a number on the label of ACD 75/60 and below that is the # S116P so that means the battery is a 5 year battery and it was made on November of 2006 at the 'P' plant Now I'm wondering if I should muster through another winter with it or get a new one. It was in my car( My C-4) when I got it. What do you think? Thank you !

At the price of a battery I personnaly never try to outlast them.The first time you get standed you pay for it just in wasted time and ......Its your call but do the math of the cost per year for reliablity.

Since it's just barely 3 years old, I would say that it's still good for another 2-3 years of reliable service.

Not True at all

Well known issue around 98-01 stock ac delco batteries that the positive post would come off on the battery causing a leak.

I have a 98 and my battery lasted 8 years before I put a new AC Delco in. This battery is still in and working fine. I never used a battery tender on them.

That was a design flaw particular to those particular batteries used in those particular years. Those things are long gone.

Just pulled battery out of my 2004. It is a ac delco. I think it is original.

I store my car during the winter, and I know while it's good for the car, it's an "iffy" deal for the battery. I do put a charger on it for 10-20 minutes each week, usually when I've got the snowblower out to clear the driveway, but still, after 4 years, I usually wind up replacing it....

You my friend need to run right down to the Minimart and buy some LOTO tickets. I too rolled the dice on my 98 Coupe battery and won but,,,,, After seeing what happens when they FAIL and leak,,, I would installed another battery. SOON!!!

I believe that the LEAKAGE issue has to do with if the POS and or NEG terminmal was abuse. Some were just plain outright defective and leaked right thru the bolt hole.

You have been warned.

On a positive note,, the battery in my 97 F150 lasted 12 years and was in the truck working fine when I sold it.

If you are a gambler, trust A/C Delco batterys. If you have had the problem of their leakage you would definetly have the intelligence to use another brand. There are several other gel battery manufactueres. Been there did that.
A word to the wise is sufficient.

I just bought a 2005 and getting ready to go on Hot Rod Power Tour and don't want any problems. I looked at the AC Delco battery and the date code is S104P. Now I know that is was made in Oct but is it 2004 or 2014? The battery looks new with a little dust on it but so does the rest of the car.
