Default New SCCA Solo Class for the C5 non-Z06

SCCA has announced a new class for 2010 that moves the SS "also run" cars into a new class now called AS. Old AS cars are moved to BS and old BS cars are now combined with old CS cars into a new CS class.

The new AS looks includes these cars:

BMW
M3 (‘08-‘10)
Z4 M Coupe/Roadster (‘06-‘08)
Chevrolet
Corvette (‘97-‘04, C5 chassis, non-Z06)
Lexus
IS-F (‘08-‘10)
Lotus
Esprit Turbo (‘96-‘04)
Mazda
RX-7 (‘93-‘95)
Mercedes
C63 AMG
Porsche
911 (‘98-‘04, 996 chassis)
Boxster S (‘05-‘08)
Cayman S (‘05-‘08)

This looks like a fun class for 2010. Which cars do you think have a chance of winning?

I think the Z51 C5 will have a shot at the top along with the older Cayman S.

A well set up RX-7 should be one of the top pics. History has shown them to be a top rung autocross car.

Until the Z07 came along the Rx-7 dominated the C5's so there isn't much chance a C5 Z51 would run with it. OTOH, nobody did any development on the C5 coupe after the Z06 showed up, so there might be some more speed in there. I'm not forgetting that Kurt Orminston won in 2000, but Erik Strelnieks pretty well dominated as I recall, I was running BSP at the time and wasn't following SS that closely. Just don't remember what the situation was when Kurt won. Eric won the pro solo championship that year in the RX-7...

A Boxster/Cayman might be a good ride, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know if they'd be competitive. The mid engine puts power down well coming off of corners and the balance is good. Depends on what tires fit the car and how they work.... Power is down, so there are pluses and minuses...

Could be interesting. The guy who works the hardest will win.

2000 Solo Natls
SS:
1. Ormiston C5 FRC, 106.7
2. Falkner 986 Boxster S, 107.0
3. Strelnieks RX-7, 107.2
5. McClure C4, 107.4

ProSolo finale
SS:
1. Strelnieks RX-7, 59.3
2. Molleker C5 FRC, 59.4
3. Isley C4, 59.6

Ormiston's sugar daddy at the time bought the car off of Tom Kotzain, about a month before Natls (which was just enough time to fit it with JRZs and Hoosiers) , when Tom decided the RX-7 was still the faster car - Tom finished 8th in the RX-7 that year.

Best move in years with this new class. Looks like a lot of fun.

+300lbs, no thanks. 40th Anniversary 2004 911 ftw. With the engine back there, you really don't need the AWD.

I haven't seen anything yet, but even if it was available, I would still be a little cautious. What TedDBere posted was the proposal that still needs to be approved by the BoD. While the BoD rarely makes changes, it could still happen.

So all the proposals (BS being integrated into CS and the creation of this "new" AS) aren't official yet.

That said, I like this new AS.
