Factory horsepower ratings L-88 427 is 430HP, the L-71 427 is 435, and the LS-7 454 is 460. The 454 will have a bit more torque (longer stroke). The reliability and weight is close enough to the same on all 3 to not be a factor.

Seeing as the original poster is a newbie, it should be stated that the L88 was in reality much higher in horsepower... it was a high compression (12:1) racing engine with over 500 hp!!!
Not ideal for street use today due to lower octane fuels, but definitely much more powerful than the factory rating of 430hp!

dont forget that all pre72 rating were the one that was without accessories.
i think it was the gross reading, in 72 they switched to net which dropped the numbers but indicated a more real one. like the 71 454 vs 72 454. big rated numbers difference most of it was because of the scale.

people wil swear by the 427 and the way it revs due to shorter stroke.. but if all else is the same... then there is no replacement for displacement... the more displacement, the more torque.. especially at the lower end of the rpm range
