Default How does a double DIN replacement radio fit?

Folks,

I am trying to figure out what radio I can put in my 90 vert to replace the blown Bose premium system.

I have been looking at the Crutchfield web site and they say that some of the double DIN units will fit. I don't understand how a DD will fit into a 1.5 DIN slot. What do they do - chop the dash apart?

Anyone got pictures of a double DIN installed on their 1.5 DIN slot you can post?

Thanks!

Oh sorry - I found the answer in the Audio Forum. The Dremmel tool is our friend!

When I had the Alpine and B&W system installed they put a single DIN head unit with a storage slot under it, came out pretty slick!

Take a look at the DD JVC KW-XC777. It looked and worked great in my 90. When I traded it in on my 93, I kept it and installed it also!

I just installed a Kenwood DPX503 Double-Din in my 91 ZR-1, looks great, sounds great, selectable illumination to match the factory orange color... nice unit, not perfect, but a nice package.

100% correct response. My double DIN unit can be seen in my Corvette photos to the left

After a lot of searching (too many choices) I decided to go with the following:

Kenwood DNX6140 head
Polk MM651 6.5" in the rear
Polk MM521 5.25 in the front
Kenwood KSC-SW10 Sub

That put me at just over $1K.

I am guessing it will take an extended weekend for me to get it all in. I really wanted to try to use the stock speaker enclosures and I think this setup should make it so I don't have to cut up the dash or change the speaker enclosures. A forum member is sending me a special harness that should make it so I should not have to chop up the factory harness. I am reading up in the Red Book service manual trying to get an idea where everything is and how to take it apart. Got my resisters from Radio Shack to prevent the CCM codes. Should make a good project for the Labor Day weekend and probably following weekends too! Don't want to kill myself as it is still Inferno season down here.
