Default weak valve springs

Do you think gm will admit they have a problem with bad valve springs and do a recall? They seem to be replacing a lot of engines.

Default valve springs

I know there have been a lot of broken springs.I believe there will be a lot more as these engines begin to get older. I have never had valve springs break on any other car or truck ihave owned.I have a o2 zo6 that i am afraid to crank till change out the springs.I broke one last spring . I know broken springs can= broken engines

From what I have read its very rare but it does happen.. I ask my Service writer that question and he said he has not seen any cases of broken springs on the LS6.. He is a personal friend of mine and has been with the dealership for 17 years.. This is a large high volume dealership in Dallas Tx. I have considered changing my springs out just for peace of mind.. It would be interesting to start a permanent poll on owners who have broken and not broken a spring on their LS6

I thought the LS6 in the 02+ were upgraded. Were they not?

I really find that hard to believe that he has not seen any? Mine let go at about 26000 miles, luckily these engines almost refuse to run with a broken valve spring and I saved my motor. The dealer I took mine to said this was not the first one he had seen and they are a small dealership in Marysville Washington. From what I hear 02s had the most problems and mine is an o2.

I find it hard to believe also. that he has not seen any broken springs. I see no reason for him to lie. From the search I have done on broken valve springs on this forum I count around 35 people posts/threads who have experienced this. This is a very tiny number when you look at the number of Z06 owners that participate on this forum.. Of course we will never know exact numbers because there are owners who do not participate on this forum and/or do not post. The link I posted above has been an open thread for a long time, so I assume any forum member with a broken spring and the ability to do a search would have had some input if they had problems

Interesting. I have less than 30K on my Z06, so I can't really tell you guys yet. But I'm also on a stock motor with the only mods on my car being wheels and intake.

My 02 Z06 is in the shop right now with a cratored engine due to weak springs, it dropped a valve in the #7 cylinder. Pics are in my profile albumn. My warranty is covering me for a new engine.

My 01 had a faulty spring. It didn't break but the car would break up at high RPM.

Yeah, I was somewhat disappointed when the thread was closed because it was "too old" and people started to add info to it ...

This is an on going issue, so IMO let people continue to post in a thread that already has the background and data in it. Besides, as more and more valve spring failures show up it would have been nice to continue the data in that thread. Logic ... what logic.

I think it is very important that the thread be opened especially if people post their engine build date and serial number.

Is this predominately an '02 and earlier problem? I haven't seen anyone mention if it's happening to newer cars. I hope I'm not jinxing myself but my '03 has 74k trouble-free miles on its engine. I'm wondering if I should consider changing out the springs even though I have no intentions of doing any more mods to the engine. I've done several long distance trips with no problems and now you guys have me thinking about my 400+ round trip miles to Carlisle next weekend.

this problem has effect all years of the Z06 (01-04).. but on the overall scale of how many cars were built its a small percentage.. seems like it happens on the lower mileage cars... maybe from extended periods of the springs staying in one position.. who knows..

It should have never been closed and should be reopened as a sticky. We need more info, data and input on this subject. Closing the thread is the same mentality as GM closing the doors on the C5 Column Lock recall issue back in 2007.

and FYI....

this is only early 02 and 01 cars... mostly early 02 cars. Late 02 cars no longer have the "yellow" behives from what i understand.

The 02's got the larger cam but the first batch did not get upgraded valve springs to go along with them. Thats why this issue is predominantly on 02's

(mine is an 02 as well)

Mine's an early 02 also, and just past 20K miles. Guess I better get serious about swapping out the valve springs real soon.

Maybe I can peer through the oil fill cap on the valve cover and see if I have the yellow behive springs?

What color were the replacement GM springs? (I forget).
