Installed this cam into my '81 rebuild...and now wondering what in the world I was thinking...

Anyone have this cam and driving it on the steet? In what engine? What base timing are you using?

Comp Cams state a 1500 - 5500 RPM range....is this going to work on the street?....what was I thinking

For a stock motor with stock lousy heads like you have it will work but not like if you had some decent compression and a better set of heads. Beyond that I think the 268 is a very mild cam. Yes it can easily be run on the street. I would and do run a much larger cam on the street.

I had the Comp Cams 268H in my vette years ago with a mild 8.5:1 350. It would idle down to 650 rpm with just a slight lope. Good street cruiser cam

comp cams says that if you have an auto it is the largest you can run on stock torque converter doesnt it.

I have this cam in my son's 72 1/2 ton short bed. Rebuilt short block with flat tops. Vortec heads, Lar's carb. 350 THM with shfit kit, stock converter. It runs good, nice lope on idle, will laydown a nice loooooooong chrip in second, and gets decent mileage. Good cam for every day driver.

Comp Cams states my cam operates in the 3000 - 7500 RPM range. Works great on the street

I have this cam in my 81. I added Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads with the 64 cc chamber size, and Stan's headers with a true dual exhaust and no emission stuff. This is a nice steeetable cam with lopey idle and nice pull to about 5000 rpm. Enjoy it.

I've got this cam in my 350, using L98 aluminum heads, 650 Mighty Demon, Holley dual plane, and Hooker header/sidepipes. It pulls about 17" of vacuum at 650 rpm. I'm still tuning it and my tranny (stock turbo 400, not downshifting or upshifting properly) is not set up right but I think it runs really well. I've got 35 degrees of total timing, 12 degrees initial. I'm going to go with a 700R4 with my 3.08 gearing and finish dialing it in.

My rebuild was not exactly stock; used flat top 2 valve relief pistons, and threw away the stock heads and used 882 heads, shaved 0.010 with 2.02/1.6 valves, bronze guides, Comp Cams 1.6 roller tip rockers, Hooker side exhaust headers, max flow mufflers. Compression is about 1 higher than stock.

Still using the stock intake and E3ME carb though...at least at this time as I was going to have to go through emissions testing...but not anymore....no moer EGR valve, AIR pump...all sitting on the shelf.

I was just wondering about base timing setting....originally was 8 BTDC...not sure it will go that low and idle.

Don't worry about base timing, set dist. for 36* total and let the base fall where it wants

Thats what I did. I unplugged the computer, set the timing to around 10 BTDC; plugged the computer back in, then held the engine at 2000 rpm and set the timing to be 36-38. I did not go back and see what the base timing was afterwards with the computer unplugged....it was 12-14 with the computer plugged in at idle.

I just installed a 268H into an 81 and dyno tuned it this morning. You guys are right on with the timing. Best runs were at 35 degrees. Intial on this car was 15.5.

The cam makes nice power and has a good sound at idle. Nice cam.
