Where can I buy some metal plates for my driveway? - to stop scraping
My C5 Z06 is scrapes the frame rails every day on my driveway. I have the fat daddy wheels and they help. But, I would like to lay some 3" wide steel across my drive way slope where the sidewalk meets the street to make the transition more gradual.
Does anyone know a cheap source to find some 3' x 4' steel sheets of metal? I called a couple steel shops and they are charging $245 - 385 depending on thickness.
I prefer to find a scrap yard. It doesn't have to be pretty.
Thanks,
John

I've picked up some high polished steel from this company.
Not sure where you live, so use the store locator, for the one in your area.

John- Once I get my car home and lower it more with the tiger shark front I want to see how bad off I am. If it is horrible I will be doing the same thing. Don't kjump the gun and I can more then likely get the steel at a great price if not damn close to free. I know a few buddies in the business. I realize you are looking at 3" wide how long do you want them. Give me a week on this.
I also see you are looking for 3'X4' sheets. Give me an exact measurement and I can even get it cut.

Hey Teddy,
I'll take you up on that. I am looking for 3' x 4' steel plates. I could use at least two pieces or four if they are cheap enough. I'd like to do the entire with of the two car driveway if possible.

We just bought the house 6 mos ago. It doesn't scrape that bad, I just want to eliminate it.
We were looking at houses, we were going to look at this one house in Belmont that had this horrendous driveway where my car scraped badly... I told my wife not to even get out of the car. If the car can't get up the driveway, its off the list.

Allen Steel in Redwood City.
I bought a 2' x 10' piece of 1/2" plate. Weights 400 pounds. Normally $1/lb, got a -30% discount cuz it was "used." They also have 3/8".

Allen Steel quoted me $385 for (2) New 3' x 4" pieces. He said that they didn't have any scraps that big. I need to see if I can get away with 2' wide pieces.

Have a similar problem with my cutouts on my car. Have a sunken driveway off the curb of the street. Not only have I shaved some concrete to level it off, but I also use 2x4's (wooden planks) to clear the peak of the driveway. I think it cost me a whole 26 bucks at Home Depot after I cut them.

Be carefull. Many municipalities do not allow you to put plates if they touch the sidewalk, gutter, or street. It is likely that you would just be told to remove it and not fined unless you failed to comply. However, if you just spent hundreds of dollars on the plates, that would suck.

with doje....check the local city first.
You might try Naylor Steel in Hayward. They have plate in stock and can shear to any size. You may want to consider floor plate (checker plate) rather than smooth plate. The smooth plate will be very slippery when wet. Depending on the span, you could use 3/8 plate.
Another source might be Alco Steel and Metal in San Leandro, call first and see if they have any used.
You could always park you car in my garage....just leave the keys
