Default 1976 Stingray Side Pipes Exhaust Vs. Factory Rear

Another newbie question was thinking about adding the side pipe DINOMAX exhaust to the Vette instead of the rear orginal equipment what are you guys thoughts on that? I think it would look alot better? Was wondering if there was anything special that needed to be done and how much of a pain it was? Looks like its going to cost $350-$500 I think???Thanks in advance...

I think you meant Dynomax side pipes, IMHO, if you are going to add side exhaust, go all the way and add Hooker Side mount headers.

Depends upon your flavor, Black headers are cheapest along with black pipes starting at around $850.

Catalytic converters are used on '75 and up. That is why dual exhaust is only listed for '74 down. Legally you can't put side exhaust on a '75 up, unless it is for off-road use only....

That explains the 74' then..thanks.. so my next question is how many cops in the world are going to know that side exahaust is illegal on my 76' and is the risk worth the reward? $1000 in a something I may not be able to use???

Cops don't care, do you have to get your car smog checked on a yearly or bi-yearly basis, or is it exempt due to it's age. If it's exempt, you are good to go.

Just talked to my mechanic he said should it be checked yes but most places in NY dont because of the year of the car and didnt think i would have any trouble getting it inspected every year and to rip the catlyst sticker off the fan shroud if there is one....

He doesn't know Corvettes. It's on the cowl, not the fan shroud.

The only reasons not to do this are money and hot pipes that burn the legs of your lady friends. Seriously, think about who is getting in/out besides you. BTW, my 76 has Hookers and I love them! I'm not subject to any sort of visual or sniffer inspections here in SW Wisconsin.

Default NY Emissions

I'm also in NY State. The followg is copied from the NY DMV site, so it looks like you' re exempt.

These motor vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for gas-powered vehicles:

* Vehicles that are less than two model years old, or more than 25 model years old (for example, a 1975 model in 2001).

I think these mid year pipes look pretty good.

I get plenty of compliments on them from other Corvette people at shows anyway.
