We are contemplating a move to the sand hills area (Pinehurst) of North Carolina. How are the NC laws pertaining to old cars? As the 75 is highly modified, I would hate to have problems.

Also, feel free to comment on the area.

P.S. Anybody drag race at Rockingham?

If you car is older than 35 years you can get an antique plate, and
reduced property taxes. My '75 only gets a "safety inspection" to get
a sticker. It varies by county - large metro counties are more strict
because of more cars - perhaps the Pinehurst area is not. Log onto
NC DMV and you might get more specific answers. That is a beautiful
area you are moving too!!! Welcome. Peter

The mechanics in the shop here at Ft. Bragg told me to wait a year and I wouldn't need to get an inspection sticker. I have a '74.
(That was last year too, actually!)

Edit: I don't think me or the that mechanic can count too good. It's only 34 years old now, still got another year to go.

I'm also from N.C. and you only need a safety insp.if you car is a 95 and older and when it reaches 35 yrs. old you do not have to have it inspected. I have regular plates on mine and the property tax is only $33.00

Although NC as of January 2 the below has occured due to some idiot helping a friend register a "kit car" as an actual Antique Car.


"Effective January 2, 2008, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is changing the procedure for registering an antique or custom-built motor vehicle. Customers who are bringing an antique or custom-built vehicle into North Carolina for first time registration, or who have custom assembled a motor vehicle will be referred to a DMV License and Theft Bureau Inspector. I've also heard that this inspection process will apply to all antique cars purchased after Jan 2 being registered by a new owner regardless of prior NC registration....

I inspect all my vehicles in NC. 1995 and newer get plugged into the OBD II computer for faults in addition to the normal safety inspection items. My 80 vette was inspected last in 2006 and they never even opend the hood, just the safety items. No antique plates no wink and nod, just the inspection.

My brother in law lives very close to Ft. Bragg and having been in the military, he's on post quite often at the autoparts store there.
