After some problems at a TD y changed the PS pump with one modified by Turn one steering.

After some hot laps I realized that there was some smoke coming from the engine bay. When I opened the hood I noticed that the problem was due to some power steering overflowing from the reservoir.

I thought that the Turn one steering pump would reduce the presure enough so this would not happen.

Are you guys having this problem?
Do you have any suggestions to avoid this from happening?
Could this mean that I will have problems eventually?

I am really confused here and have a Track day this Saturday and I am afraid that something could go wrong.

Are you sure it's overflowing, not just foaming up and coming out the little breather hole in the cap?

What fluid are you running. I was using Mobil 1 ATF and it foamed up easily. Went to Valvoline Synpower and have been better off since.


Also, if the suction hose is leaking the pump will draw air in here. If you aren't 100% sure this hose is good, change it. GM part only, about $30.

Underdrive crank pulley would help too.

I am sure it is not foaming because I took a look inside of the reservoir and was ok.
I am actually using the GM fluid recomended by the manual.
Steering feel is good, no problems there, but the idea of an overflow makes me nervous because it might mean that the pump is still working at a lot of pressure.

Ideas on what to do?

it's not overfilled, is it? also, could it just be the seal on the cap? i've seen some where the spring and/or seal deteriorated and sloshing would easily leak out.

also, do you have a cooler?

Yes, i have a cooler and the reservoir was not overfilled.

If it's not overfilled, then there is no possibility of it expanding that much to overflow. It has to be either boiling, or drawing air in or otherwise foaming. Does it make any groaning noises when you drive it hard for awhile at high RPMs? The groaning is the sound of air or vapor pockets hitting the pump impeller, and will damage it eventually.

PS Pump and Gear work fine. It is that when driven hard ( 120 +) there is some smoke coming from the passenger side due tue P S fluid that gets out of the reservoir.

I read somewhere else that some forum members were using some kind of overflow tank, but I can't seem to find the posts.

Any idea on this kind of modification?
