New engine and tranny in - wont turn over now!!
OK....I installed my new motor yesterday, turning it over quite easily Friday night setting the lash on the rockers.Saturday morning I installed the tranny onto the motor (outside of the car) and installed them both together. No real issue, tranny was a little tight going in, but nothing I hadn't felt before.
Installed motor no problems, until this afternoon, wanted to install the fuel pump, so put a bar on the lower crank bolt, went to turn and its stuck, motor is jammed solid, there's no plugs in the motor so it should turn over easy.
The clutch is a dual friction centerforce (brand new) the transmission is a richmond road race five speed (recently bought froma forum member who had it in their vette) the trans is in neutral, yoke turns freely.
I can grab the clutch fork and the fork moves freely backwards and I can feel the pressure plate the other way.
Theres no starter on it for that to get in the way....
Ideas?? I'm ready to pull the tranny out again.

This may be a silly question, but is there a flex plate that could have been installed backwards? I don't know a lot about GM manual setups but I saw that on a MOPAR, and the plate was backwards and it put so much pressure on the rotating assembly it wouldn't turn and felt like it was locked.

By tight, I meant that the tranny went in most of the way into the bellhousing, had to draw it in with the bolts the last 1/4"..and I used a short wrench, there was little or no resistance.

I am with David, maybe the clutch is on a bind. Depress the clutch or push the clutch fork with a 2x4 if its not hooked up yet, make it release. Is the starter installed yet? Jammed?

well, it sounds like the tranny and clutch plate are aligned enough to let you bolt them to motor.....does anyone know if some of those richmonds have a longer input or require a different pilot bearing?

Are you using the same bellhousing? I did this once long ago- swapped bellhousings and got one for a 153 tooth wheel. Got it on somehow over a 168- had it locked up tighter than Dick's hatband.
Just a thought.

I'm new here and while I'm sure there are people who really know their stuff, but I bet the vast majority doesn't and the beauty of this forum is to be able to ask questions and pick peoples' minds whenever one is trying to troubleshoot a problem they might have with their perspective car.
I wouldn't have any idea as to what the problem could be but I hope he gets his car running fine

Sounds like something in the xmission. If its out of the car(engine and transmission) and if it turned freely without the transmission then it must be in the transmission.

did you put the flywheel on after you had set the valves. I have found so many lengths of flywheel / flexplate bolts it's not funny. if a flywheel bolt is to long it can lock everything up like you mentioned.

I had the engine on a cradle, with the flywheel and clutch attached before I had set the valves...must have rotated the engine eover a dozen times whilst setting and then checking the valves.
The linkage is on the tranny, I have the shifter in the middle (out of gear) "wobbling around" and can spin the tailshaft so it doesnt seem to be stuck in gear.
The clutch fork is free, by that I mean if I push forward its easy to move (throw out bearing towards the back of the car) and if I push it backward I can feel it hit the fingers of the pressure plate (I can't move it much more forward by hand)
I will conect up the linkage tomorrow, and see what happens when I press the pedal.

This may sound stupid but when I did my rebuild the stock starter didn't have enough a$$ to turn over the higher Compression ratio engine. I put on an after market starter and all problems were solved.
