Best way to change out fuel injectors
I had my '89 (L98) was diagnosted and there are 2 bad and 2 marginal injectors. So, I'm going to replace all 4. The shop folks said that everything on top (runners, plunum, fuel rails) needs to be removed first. Do they?
What's the best way to go about this?
Thanks!

Just did this on my 86e. Take all the connectors loose, unbolt the Plentium and runners (throttle body can stay on just take off throttle lines). Then there is the fuel rail with 4 bolts holding it in. Also lossen the brake booster line on the back. You will see other little things once you get in there. Replace all runner gaskets with new ones. I strongly suggest replacing all 8 while your there, good bit of work for another one to go bad. JMO

I agree with the others that you should replace all 8 if you are going to pull the rail.
If you want to see what you are in for, here is my photo doc of intake swap. You can see what you need to do to get the fuel rail out.

I had my injectors serviced by Cruzin' Performance. If you can live without the car for a couple of weeks it is cheaper than buying a new set and they seem to work just fine.

I strongly suggest to replace all 8 injectors. I bought 8 new ones from 5 0 Motorsports. It was less expensive than having my rebuilt (at the time). The injectors were guaranteed for 15,000 miles. I have only put about 1500 miles on my car since the replacement, but they work very well. The injectors, usually come from new Cobra Mustangs, but are taken out when Motorsports cranks up the power. Taking the plenum, runners, and various pieces is time consuming, but not very difficult. I even went ahead and pulled the intake manifold off so I could fix the oil leak( even though very minor) at the back of the manifold. Just make sure you label all of the pieces and correctly torque the bolts. I bought a Haynes repair manual. As I said, it is a little time consuming, but it is satisfying to know that the repair shop wanted $1300.00 to do the work. That money saved is going into my new cam, springs, and rockers!

Just to add to the listing: Make sure you remove neg cable, and depressurize the fuel line before removing the gas lines and injector rails.
Also, get some small bags and label all your bolts, or another trick is to take a pizza box and draw the part (both sides) and mark the holes then put the bolts in the holes on the pic, helps in reinstall.
Take alot of pic, worth a hundred words.

You can do the injectors without pulling the runners, that's what I did on my '89. Trick is to pull the plenum, then disassemble the fuel rail in place.
Sam Lam on the forum has a Word doc with some good tips on disassembling the rail with the runners still in place.
Good luck!

Thanks for the responces. I would replace all 8, however I'm on a time crunch. I've have to wait a week for "overnight" shipping.
Do you think the best way to get the word doc is to IM Sam Lam?

When I replaced the injectors in my 89, I checked the bolts on my intake manifold. Four were loose, and I saw signs of coolant on the rear of motor. I pulled the manifold and replaced the gaskets because I was there.
Not hard, just time consumming!

Summit carries the Ford injectors and can get a set of 8 to your doorstep for about $240. These are much better than the multecs, if that's what you have on now.
