I am planning on putting some stabil in my tank. There is some gas alreay in there and I will going to get it fill it up the rest of the way tomorrow. I want to put the proper amount of stabil in so I need to know how much the tank holds.

the bottle of Stabil suggests you can double the doseage for long term storage...
I have been able to get close to 20 gallons in my tank if I keep filling past the auto shutoff at the pump and squeze in the last bit until it is visible in the filler neck.

And you would want to do this.... why?
All you're doing is jeopardizing the evaporative emissions system.

Always have (for winter storage) to mimimize rrisk of condensation.
What is the issue with the evaporative emissions system.... I wasn't awre I might be doing something incorrectly. thanks

Here's something apparently none of you have thought about.
There are two tanks, one behind each seat, of approx. 9 gallons each for a total of about 18 gallons. When you fill the car, all the gas runs into the driver side tank first, then when it's full, gas runs across the fill tube to the passanger side tank. The fill tube is at the very top of that ridge that runs behind the seat backs inside the car. You can see it if you get under the car. If you put all your stabil for 18 gal in, then fill the car, it will all go into the driver side tank. If you fill the driver side tank and wait until the end to put in the stabil, most of it will go to the passenger side tank.

Correct that is why I run down to about 1/4 tank in the fall.... put in half the stabil fill to almost full and then put in the balance of the stable and then top off the tank....which resulted in my original post that I squeeze in almost 20 gallons ...and was told I could be damaging my emissions system.....

has anyone actually filled up to 18gallons? I can't seem to get past 16max.... when my needle has been on or below E... I've even used the BG additive, techron, etc...
hehe do I just have a small tank? or is the gas gauge?

I do know that my 2004 kept throwing a code and "Check Engine" every week of so, but we couldn't find anything wrong with it (don't ask which code - I don't remember). A forum member asked me if I overfill the tank, which I always did. He said that may be the cause. I began to quit when the auto shutoff kicks in - no more codes for the last six months.

If you over fill your tank, meaning keep clicking until you see gas, the vapor recover system can suck gas into that system. You can have trouble at the annual test, you can throw codes, or nothing can happen. So to be safe, stop when the handle clicks off. I set the handle on the slow speed so it fills up slow and easy in both tanks.
