Default What ever happened to the Stingray?

What happened to the Stingray Corvette? Why did they stop making them? Why were they called Stingray instead of just Corvette? Just curious about their history.
Thanx,
Rich

I love the vents the Stingray had in the upper door panels on the exterior.

Sting Rays were built from 63 through 67. Folks in the C2 section probably know more about these.

Stingrays were built from 69 through 76. These were C3s.

I didn't like any of the LS2 or Z51(which I don't have) emblems, so I ordered two of these:

Kind of a homage to the original.

Hold on!,........ let me get my flame suit on.

Well *damn* that looks good...Can somebody say expensive (CF?) bodykit?!
Like the flares/wide-***-tires combo the best. Although the whole thing is...menacing...like the C3.

Those gills look awesome! I don't know if they would look that good on a real C6, but they look great in that pic.

I believe the prototype for the second generation Corvette was called Sting Ray, and they liked the name so much, they decided to call the production cars Corvette Sting Ray to differentiate them from the C1. The prototype for the third generation was called the Mako Shark. Yet, in 1969, they named the C3 - Corvette Stingray. For the C4, I think the Corvette was so well known they decided to simplify, and call it just - Corvette. Also, people were starting to use C1, C2, C3,...

stingrays are very cool and the C6/Z06 stingray picture is very very cool

Would wonder if GM can do that body style and put the supercharger to differentiate a little and sort of do what ford GT did..(bringing back)

it would be a great great idea i think..

A blue devil stingray sort of thing..

Did you put that on your car? I'd love to see a picture of that!
