After extensively searching for the topic I need, without success, I've come for help. Several weeks ago there was a post detailing why the vortecs need to have the hose from the vortec intake to the water pump. I'm to that point now and would like a repeat of that post or a link. There was reference to this arrangement being on the big blocks and even a picture of someone having done this. The alignment from the intake to the pump is not a straight shot and I'm curious how others have plumbed this. Any help and guidance is appreciated.

Hi,

I can't find the link either but I was a part of it so I'll explain from what I remember. Here is the pic:


I didn't take pic of the rubber hose attach and my car is away for the winter. What I did was to put fitting in the intake and water pump and then I did a model of the hose that I needed (with metal wire). I went to the part store and ask the guy at the counter to find me something that would look-a-like. He found one, it was around 1/2'' dia if I remember correctly. I had to cut a little lenght but it was a close fit. The hose start at the water pump straight up, does a 90 degrees to the horizontal and then another 90 degrees toward the intake fitting.

I have a ZZ430 with a Edelbrock Air Gap Vortec intake. My intake has these same provisions. What is the purpose of a hose directly from the intake to the top of the water pump?

The heads are missing a hole that allow the cooling circuit to by-pass the thermostat from the water pump through the passenger side head and intake. That hole prevent pressure build-up during warm-up. In other word, if you don't have it, pressure will prevent thermostat to open until the engine get really hot (read in the red).

Strange I don't have one hooked up. Absolutely no trouble. I am using a short water pump that doesn't have any provision for a top hose fitting.

from what i have been told, this only needs to be done on 86 and newer blocks. supposedly the passage is in the block , not the heads. i dont know for sure though.

found where i read it at. my intake instructions.
cant copy and paste , so i'll quote.
"This intake manifold is primarily intended for use with Vortec heads on pre-Vortec blocks. Standard engine blocks route thermostat bypass water from the block directly to the water pump through the passenger side water pump mounting flange. If the manifold is used on a 1996 and later Vortec engine that does not have the in -block bypas passage, you must route a thermostat bypass hose from the water bypass port on the front of the manifold to the 5/8" hose nipple on the passenger side of the Vortec water pump. Use a 3/8" pipe to 5/8" hose nipple fitting, and a 7" length of 5/8" hose to accomplish this. If your engine block has the thermostat bypass passage, use the 3/8" plug supplied in the kit to plug the bypass port in the front of the intake manifold."

I have a 1996 vortec block so in my case, the passage wasn't there. I didn't check if the heads had the passage, so it could be the block that causes that problem.
