How much does freon R12 cost these days?
Is it up around $50 or more per pound or so? I'm guessing it varies depending on what part of the country you're in (supply/demand).
Anyone bought any recently?

So then, I'm guessing that shops (that have a license) would charge much more than that, and for proper recovery and handling, etc. Probably over $80 per. (I'm trying to help a friend out.)
Thanks!
Thanks!

DRAIN & CLEAN your system first repiar any small leaks with REDTEK pro seal and refill that R12 system with RED TEK 12a...it replaces 134a and R12

Demand is minimal, but there's still a lot of greed and there is a
Federal Excise Tax to promote recycling. 12A is banned outright in some states & was denied approval (twice) by the EPA as an alternative refigerent. It's a hydrocarbon blend; potentially flammable. The last search I did showed most vendors charging $20/lb. Usually, you have to buy a 30 lb bottle, enough for about 12 Vettes. Autozone had a firesale last year, $10 to $15 a can - you need about 4; don't know if it's still going on. Check Ebay.

Yeah, I've heard of the alternative ones, and they don't seem to stick around as long. I think they're illegal in CA, and an honest mechanic won't touch it.
I guess you have to be a criminal to have cold air these days. Damn bureaucrats. Oh well, I guess I should tell my friend to sell his roadster and buy a new Honda so he can be more compliant.

Asian a/c isn't bullet proof either. Since '88, the Corvette has used a Nippondenso compressor - a Toyota spinoff in the '50's and their compressors are also used by the likes of Porsche, Lexus & Infinity (just to name a few). They break too and probably because of the luxury nameplates, cost a bundle to replace. Your buddy's problem probably isn't much different than what most individuals who own a car that is 9 years or older. Fixing the a/c right, even if the gas was free, isn't worth the cost. And a lot of shops will tell you that it can't just top off a leaking system (not the law, but a good way to make some big $$$). So if your friend would like to do it himself, tell him to get a license at http://www.epa.com for 25 bucks or any of the web sites listed at http://www.epa.gov in the Ozone section. With that, he can buy all the R12 he'll ever need and if he wants, keep all his buddys' Hondas charged up as well.
