Default What are the symptoms of bad ignition timing?

What kind of performance/operation would I experience from my engine ('89 L98) if my ignition timing where off (either advanced or retarded)?

Thanks in advance.

With optimum timing trap speed will be highest, from peak hp.

If timing is too advanced ping and timing retardation will result, as can be seen on a scan tool.

If timing is too retarded throttle response will suffer as well as peak hp.

speaking of timing, what/where is the wire that you have to unplug to get an accurate reading with a timing gun?

it should be 8 degrees on a stock motor, correct?

And the stock setting is 6*, but the L98 likes it a little advanced so i run 8*

I thought it was 6. I also had a popping (backfire) from timing being off. Now I have a slight hesitation when hitting the gas, my timing is off a little I did it by ear to get it close. I let someone borrow my timing light and haven't seen it since.

The wire to disconnect is located beside/ behind the dist on the passengers side. One of those weatherproof connectors that looks like an inline fuse holder.Tan with black stripe from memory.
