Its just a code designation for GM. Almost all GM engines that i know of start with an L designation, and then they pick some letters and a number to follow it and any related engines.
LT-1 was another name for a corvette engine back in the early 70s. LS6 (now the z06 motor) was a popular engine for the Chevelles back in the day.

I agree.
I think it is just an RPO code used internally to Chevrolet that became cool to use. Another one is Z28, Z51, etc.
Heck my brother has a 69 Caprice with a LS1...no not a late model 5.7L aluminum engine, but an RPO LS1 335 HP 427 CI big block Chevy...kind of funny.

LT, I heard in the past was the designation for the Light Truck motors is the earlier days, I can't comfirm that for sure. Just heard that through other people.
