Factory L82 cam, ever heard of it? is it any good?
Well, as you all may know my edelbrock cam brock in two places Sunday. The oil pump pick up was left not sitting in the bottom of the oil pan when i replaced it and so my neccessary oil pressure was greatly reduced! It's purely my mistake and not an act of bad luck.I will pull the oil pan, check the oil for metal, reposition the pump pick up and use a new one piece gasket for the pan( or replace the pan). The edelbrock cam didn't explode all over the engine but i will offcourse check my crank,pistons and rods while the pan is out! I am have an offer from a friend for a "free" L82 replacement cam w/lifters journals and the like!! This sounds great but i am unfamiliar with this cam especially as it would relate to the performer imatake manny. Is this my best solution???

The L82 cam is a pretty nice piece. Definitely a stronger cam than an L48 cam. I've heard that the L82 cam is the same cam found in some of the earlier high horsepower 350 motors. I know I wouldn't pass up a free cam :) . What kind of performance are you looking for out of the cam?

If it's free, it's definitely hard to beat the price. It's a good cam, probably a little "stronger" than the regular edelbrock performer. But consider the work involved in installing a new cam, and you might want to go up to a more modern grind. Accept the cam, steal the lifters, and get another cam somewhere else. ;)

I was planning on having most of my torque down low btween 1500-5000 RPM. The intake is designed for tat as this cam and intake constitue the edelbrock "performance package" for tat RPM range. As long as this cam doesn't hurt that then all systems are go!!!

The L82 cam is a very good cam, is the same as was used on the 327/350 and 350/350 engines. Specs are .450/.460 lifts, 222/222 duration, 114 lsa .
But it is an older design, so some of the more "modern" grinds may be better. But for the price it is a good one.

Well, then i guess i'll shut the hell up and take the new cam. I dont know for sure what the more modern grinds will give me but their advantages are negated by my super super super sale price.

There is no problem using that cam w/ the intake!
The 2102 Edel. "performer" cam is only a little more than L-48 cam & is not enough for a 350 Vette. Better match w/ L-82 cam for 350 VETTE!

L82 is a nice cam. Good lift for good tq. Lower duration for good bottom end. As far as stock grinds for the small block go, its one of the better ones. I wouldnt pass it up.

On the chart you can see that the L-82 cam will make about 15 more HP than the Edelbrock performer grind. The Performer will make about 14 more # of torque.

Sorry to hear of your misfortunes Sharky. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it pours you know. :( But at least now you gott'n all the experience ya need for this hobby. :yesnod:

I've built a couple of L82 cammed 350-355's. With headers and a good exhaust, they pull strong from 2000-6000. Installing the cam 4 degrees advanced, increased bottom-end torque noticeably.

I think it is a very good cam. As others have said, it is the same as the L46 350/350. Having driven both the L46 and the L82 I will say that the higher compression 11:1 pistons of the L46 made a big difference in the engine's "bite" compared to the otherwise very similar L82. The factory did their homework with this one.

With an L82 cam and a Lars recurve kit, my '79 has a very lumpy idle. But it still has enough torque at 1500 rpm to keep the OD tranny running smooth :yesnod:
