Default What is this black dust coming from my exhaust?

Whenever I drive my 2002 Vert, black dust accmulates on the rear of the car. It comes from the exhaust. Why so much and so often? When I clean the car it is dirty after a 25 mile drive. The exhasut tips also get black along the bottoms. Everything is stock on the exhaust and engine. Seems like too much carbon build up or something. Any help would be great? Car only has 5,00 miles. :mad

I have the same problem, but it only occurs when I do alot of full-throttle runs. I think it's just caused by oil that's getting burnt when you really max it out. I think all cars will burn at least some oil when you push them to extremes.

Sounds like soot from the engine, I think its fairly normal though, not sure about getting dirty after only 25 miles though.

the aerodynamics of the car make the C5 notorious for "dirty but" syndrome. I have to clay the rear of my car frequently - little black specks stand out on a white car. Torch99 posted a great pic illustrating this a while back- his red C5 driving down a snow covered street - the rear end was white.

carbon is a by-product of all automotive exhaust gas. Gets worse the more unburned fuel or oil leaves the motor and burns off in the exhaust: HC's go sky high. the tell-tale is usually a lot of carbon soot at the @ss end. Gotta love it!! If you consume oil, you will have a lot of carbon, too

Not to scare you but my Vette did the same until I had the ring fix installed. Now the exhaust tips stay relatively clean for days, where as before it took only an hour or two to get “sooty”. This may not be your problem, just an FYI.

good luck
