What type of oil do you use?
I'm going to change my oil for the first time. I take my STS to an Instant oil change in my Neighborhood. I use the Valvoline Synthetic. They don't have Mobil 1, and will charge the same if I bring it in. Is Mobil 1 better or is there another oil I should know about?

I guess it should be alright to use another brand as long as it meets the standards listed in the owners manual.

All of the major brands(Castrol, Valvoline, Penzoil etc.) synthetic oil meet the G.M. 4718 requirement . So all of them can be used in your Corvette.

I use Mobil 1 0-30 Severe Duty Synthetic oil and AC UPF 44 GOLD filters. I have 18,000 miles on a 6-speed Z51 Convertible. So far it has worked great.

I guess I just didn't want to change oil shops . I used to do it my self but I've grown older, and it's not that much more to pay some one and they can worry about the old oil. :D Thanks for the advise.

Mobil 1 oil change with filter Every 1000 miles.
Of course check your oil and add as needed in between oil changes. ;)

Any oil that meets GM 4718. Currently either Havoline Synthetic or Exxon (I think). Usually one of them can be bought for around $3.00 /qt!
I run 40wt non-synthetic in the race car. I change it every weekend, and the temps don't get high enough to warrant synths price.

I guess I will stick with Mobil because they have a contract with GM. All synthetic oils meet the GM standard listed in the manual, your call.

Dave, Since I do (special things) with my car so I have to change it more often than the average C5. How often do you think the C5R guys change engine oil? Every 5,000 miles?

When you go to A place like Jiffylube that you drive over A pit, the rear end of your Corvette is level, It should be at least 3 inche's above the front of the car to allow the oil to drain out completly. It is important not to overfill the crankcase. Myself, I would use onle the Mobil- 1 5W30 motor oil, But i'll bet any Brand that meets the GM specks will be fine. The Upf44 filter is the only filter I would use, Although the Chevy dealerships here in the Daytona area do not stock them. They only push the regular PF44 filters. I get mine thru the Corvette Forum mall. I get my oil at K-Mart and change it my self. Then I know it is done with the proper oil & Filter and not over or under filled.

I havn't had my car long enough to get to change the oil in it yet but I am looking forward to it. I have heard alot of talk about differnet methods of getting the car in the right position in order to change the oil correctly, and for checking the levels for that matter. What suggestions do you have for lifiting the car to get to the filter. and tips on checking the oil level.

We use Mobil 1 5W-30. No issues. Change oil when the DIC shows about 20% life remaining or about every 6000 miles. New filter every change. We use Quik-E-Lube and they follow all the Corvette instructions for drain time and change information.

pjazz: Any fully synthetic SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil meeting the GM Specification "GM4718M" will be just fine for your engine. I believe that the Valvoline Fully Synthetec oil does meet that GM Specification. :yesnod:
